BOTOX® and Dysport®

Elevate Your Aesthetic Journey with BOTOX® and Dysport®

BOTOX® and Dysport® treatments are the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment, with more than 6 million treatments administered each year. They are both neurotoxins derived from clostridium botulinum, an organism found in the natural environment where it is largely inactive and non-toxic. BOTOX® and Dysport® are both neuromodulators that work to temporarily reduce activity within the muscles they are injected in to, to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the forehead, frown lines and crows feet. In addition, Botox or Dysport can be injected into the lower face for relaxation of the masseter muscles for TMJ sufferers, and various other muscles of the lower face for relaxation of muscles around the mouth, neck and jawline.

Fine lines and wrinkles are caused by a variety of factors. As we age, our skin starts to lose its collagen and elastin. Combine this with environmental exposures such as free radicals and sun exposure, and repetitive muscle contraction, and the result is lines in the skin at rest. Neuromodulators work on the muscle contraction piece of the equation. When certain muscles of the face are relaxed with neuromodulators, the result is visibly smoother skin and a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

At your BOTOX® appointment, your practitioner will carefully review and assess your facial anatomy as well as review the mechanism of action of the neuromodulators in each muscle of the face injected, so that you have an understanding of what to expect as muscles in the face are relaxed. Results are gradual and take up to 3 weeks to fully set in, and at that time, your practitioner will see you back for a follow up appointment. Results can last anywhere from 3-5 months, but a number of factors will play in to the duration of your treatment. BOTOX® and Dysport® work like a bell curve – they will reach their peak around 8 weeks and then start to gradually metabolize out of your system. There is always a risk of bruising for up to 2 weeks with any injections in the face, and you will love your treatment the most around week 6, so plan accordingly before any big events. Be sure to check out the pre and post treatment recommendations below for optimal results.

Pre-Treatment:

-Avoid any blood thinning agents at least 3 days prior to your appointment. This includes NSAIDS (ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin etc), Ginko Bilboa, fish oil, vitamin E, & garlic to reduce the risk of bruising. If you are on aspirin or prescription blood thinners however, DO NOT stop taking them without consulting your doctor first.

-Avoid alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior

-Discontinue use of retinols for at least 2 days prior to appointment.

-Schedule appointment at least 2-3 weeks before any big event to allow for product to settle properly, any touch ups needed at the 2-3 week mark and for any unwanted bruising post injections to resolve.

-Eat a small meal or snack prior to your appointment and be sure to drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.

Post-Treatment:

Avoid strenuous exercise for 24hours

-Be patient! Although you may start to notice some relaxing of the muscles by days 3-5, full results take 2 weeks. In. For this reason, no touch ups or corrective treatment will be done until at least day 14 to allow for product to completely settle. It is common for one side to start relaxing first, which can allow for temporary unevenness of muscle contraction as everything is settling. At your 2-3 week follow up appointment, your injector will ensure that results are as desired, correct any unevenness and take notes for your next session.

-Avoid any blood thinning agents for 2-3 days post your appointment.

-Some bruising may occur. Arnica gel and/or arnica supplements are great for bruising post procedure. Small injection site bumps will diminish within a few hours post treatment.

-It is recommended to wait at least 3-4 hours post injections to apply makeup due to the risk of bacteria in/on your makeup.

-Avoid any manipulation of the face (facials, Gu aSha, jade roller) for 2-3 days post injections.

-Try to use the injected muscles for 1-2 hours after treatment (ie frown, raise your brows up, smile etc). This allows the product to full integrate into the muscles. Although this is thought to help, if you forget this step, it will not negatively affect your treatment.

-BOTOX® and Dysport® results will often last 3-4 months on average at first. If you continue with the recommended treatment schedule by your provider, however, your treatment may start to last longer over time.

-Your satisfaction is important to us! Please be sure to come to your follow up appointment at 2-3 weeks and reach out to your injector with any immediate concerns.
